Bands that take inspiration from musical influences of yore often make videos that pretend to be from that era, using either old-school recording equipment to get at that authentic feel, or by simply recreating that aesthetic through mimicry.
Dead Stars is no exception to this rule. Using a video camera,“Someone Else” by the Brooklyn trio Dead Stars looks like it made the cut on an episode of MuchMusic Countdown in 1997. But what’s most winning about the video is how they play in ordinary places while life exists around them.
In a grocery store, in front of a backdrop of the beach, as well as a laundromat, Dead Stars play at some of Williamsburg’s hot spots, all of which remain unfamiliar to my inbred West Coast eyes.
