Returning for the Chan Centre for first time since his 2011 local debut, Denis Matsuev, “A virtuoso in the grandest of Russian traditions”(Gramophone) will thrill in a prodigious program of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Schumann, and Prokofiev on Oct. 20.
As one of Russia’s most celebrated living artists, Matsuev was featured before millions of viewers at the official 2014 Closing Ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympic games in Sochi. Beyond his home country, Matsuev remains one of the most sought-after musicians of his generation. From New York’s Carnegie Hall to London’s Royal Albert Hall, audiences line up to see this master of the keys first hand.
Matsuev is often compared to Russian greats before him such as Vladimir Horowitz and Emil Gilel. However, with his own heroic dynamism, superhuman technique, and poetic instinct, he has developed a singular artistic identity now considered legendary.
In this latest North American tour, Matsuev is enjoying rave reviews. Recently, Montreal’s Le Devoir hailed him as, “a pianist without equal on the planet and with few equals in the history of the piano.”
