No Sinner

Listen: “Boo Hoo Hoo”

No Sinner have come a long way since releasing their runaway single, “Boo Hoo Hoo”, three years ago. On the strength of their debut album, which shares the song’s title, they’ve graduated to shows at the Commodore and festival slots at Burnaby Roots + Blues, Squamish, and Sled Island.

It’s easy to see how No Sinner have established themselves as one of Vancouver’s favourite throwback bands: they’re daring, drip with soul, and boast a big-band attitude. “Come on and catch me if you can,” Colleen Rennison challenges on ass-kicking number “Runnin'”. It can be hard keeping up with the bombastic singer, who recalls classic songstresses like Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, and the best of Motown – but it’s worth the effort. And not to take anything away from No Sinner’s scruffy but skilful electric blues, but their tough demeanour is alluring enough: denim shorts, cowboy boots, Marlboros, straight whiskey, and torrid one-night stands are just some of the images their sleazy blooze-rock evokes.

No Sinner have put themselves square on the map this year, and if anyone tries knocking them off, they better be ready for a dust-up.
