Kits Pool Stays Open for An Extra Week

Kits Pool

For Vancouverites who haven’t had enough of summer, the Vancouver Park Board is keeping Kitsilano Pool open an extra week.

The city’s busiest outdoor public pool will remain open 7 am to 7 pm until Sunday, September 18. The Kits Pool season was extended last year, too.

“Demand for swimming is on the rise due to changing demographic trends and Kits Pool, with its phenomenal views, is always a favourite summer destination for visitors and residents alike,” said Vancouver Park Board Chair Sarah Kirby-Yung.

Kits Pool, which opened in 1931, overlooks English Bay with views of the North Shore mountains. It has the longest salt water pool in North America, with swimming lanes that stretch for 137 metres. The length of the pool attracts many serious swimmers, including triathletes who use it as a training facility.

Outdoor pools at Second Beach in Stanley Park, New Brighton Park and Maple Grove Park will close as scheduled after the Labour Day weekend. The outdoor pool at Hillcrest Centre will close in mid-September.

While lifeguards will, of course, be on duty at Kits Pool they will no longer be supervising the Park Board’s 11 beaches. Those beaches are supervised from Victoria Day through to Labour Day.

Expansion of outdoor swimming options is a Park Board priority and supports VanSplash, its most comprehensive review of aquatic facilities and services in 15 years. The strategy is reviewing existing pools and beaches and looking at ways to renew or replace aging aquatic facilities through the lens of city-wide equity and service gaps.
