Philip Seymour Hoffman Remembered

Scotty J. in Boogie Nights (1997)

Hoffman plays a closeted homosexual, Scotty J., a boom operator in LA’s funky porn scene of the late 70s to early 80s. This scene reveals that character’s crush on Dirk and ultimate rejection. This is a testament to Hoffman’s ability to display a wide array of emotions and make the audience sympathize; this scene is heartbreaking.

Brandt in The Big Lebowski (1998)

This role showed off Hoffman’s comedy skills. Brandt is the butler to millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski. His upper-class accent combined with his anxious demeanour (among other things) creates a distinctly creepy character.
