Halloween is a well-known opportunity for party going and drinking escapades. It’s also well known for its competitive sexy costume angle and hook-up culture.

However, some of us (me) miss the carefree and wholesome excitement we had for Halloween when we were kids. Back then, going out late at night felt like a dangerous adventure full of new possibilities.

So, what are we to do on Halloween if we’re not into the club scene and just want to have some spooky adventurous fun? Lucky we’re all in Vancouver where the options are endless!

Here are the top 10 adventurous Halloween activities for those of you craving an exhilarating good time.  

1. Go to a Haunted House


A jaunt through a Haunted House is of course the most quintessential adventurous Halloween thrill you can get and no better way to spend the night of October 31st. You need guts to facedown fear!

Reapers Haunted House

Run by the Moran Family and on their 25th year of operation, Reapers is one of the most well known haunted houses in the area and a definite safe bet for adventurous chills & thrills!

When: up to October 31st between 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Where: 9423 Gibson Road, Chilliwack – 1 ½ hour drive from Vancouver

Price: $11.00 for just the haunted house but $20.00 for both

Potter’s House of Horrors

Beginning this year (2017) Potter’s now has 2 haunted houses. Their first is the creepy gothic themed “The Monstrosity” and their new second house is the industrial nightmare called “The Devil’s Descent.” Either one will guarantee you the perfect level of Halloween thrills!

When: up to October 31st between 7:00pm to 10:00pm

Countdown Haunted House

A hybrid between a haunted house and an escape game, Countdown is called an “interactive haunted house”. It allows you to participate in the horrors within the walls, but you are not locked inside. Delight in the thrill of helping to save victims while being scared beyond breaking point!

When: up to October 31st between 4:30pm to 9:30pm

Fright Nights at Playland

No Vancouver Halloween List would be complete without Playland’s Fright Night. For those who don’t know, Fright Night at Playland includes a whopping 8 haunted houses! They also include 20 rides as it’s a theme park after all. A truly unique and classic Vancouver Halloween Experience.

2. Go to a Haunted Corn Maze


Lucky for Vancouverites, the lower mainland is home to a number farms with corn mazes. Nothing is creepier for a Halloween night than being chased through “Children of the Corn” style crops by a chainsaw wielding murderer!

And yes, both below corn maze options feature chainsaw murderers!  

Maan Farms Haunted & Flash Light Corn Maze

A farm run by the Maan Family which is one of the most well-known corn mazes in Lower Mainland BC. Maan Farms has 2 corn maze options for late night spook fest. One is their “haunted” option and the other is “non-haunted” but still spooky because it’s at night and you must bring your own flashlight.

Reapers Maze of Terror

Along with their haunted house, Reapers is also home to a fantastic haunted corn maze. You can visit both at the same time or separately. It’s a haunted double feature!

PNW Halloween Trail Run

PNW is a community of trail lovers who meet regularly for hikes and jogs through the British Columbia wild. This October 31st they are hosting a Halloween run in Lynn Valley beginning at the End of the Line General Store. This is a truly unique activity for those looking to combine their love for exercise, the adventurous outdoors and Halloween.

4. Go on a Visual Filmed Adventure


Not all adventures need to be active, sometimes a good adventure can be had by relaxing in a cushioned movie theatre seat. So here are 2 options for those who want to have their cake and eat it too.

Halloween FlyOver Canada

If you haven’t had the chance to see the totally unique FlyOver Canada experience, Halloween night might just be the right time for you. For those who don’t know, FlyOver Canada is a family friendly experience that simulates what it’s like to literally fly over Canada. For Halloween, they have added a Witchy element to the usual show.

Halloween Movies at the Rio Theater

The Rio Theater will be showing Halloween themed movies for the entire week leading up to Halloween night. On the 31st you can relax with popcorn and watch a cult-classic triple feature starting with the teenage 90’s witch drama The Craft (1996) at 6:20pm, the demon banishing thriller The Exorcist (1973) at 8:30pm, and finally the completely unique The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) at 11:45pm.

Along with the earlier mentioned escape game offerings, SmartyPantz is also one of the first places to offer a 10-minute Virtual Reality Experience. 8. Go on a Ghost Tour


A tour is a great option for people still new to the city or those who can’t decide on Halloween activities for the night. Follow along on these tours and learn about brutal murders, famous ghosts and urban tales set right here in your city. I bet you won’t look at Vancouver’s streets the same way again.

9. Visit a Cemetery or a Real Abandoned Asylum


These are by far the cheapest ways to get your Halloween adventure thrills. A simple walk through a cemetery or abandoned asylum during the day is creepy enough, but on Halloween night it will be a spine-tingling nightmare.  

Riverview Hospital Coquitlam

Riverview Hospital is famous for being one of the creepiest abandoned buildings in Canada. At one point it was a hospital for psychologically disturbed individuals but was closed in 1983. Now the hospital is frequently used for film and tv shows such as the X-Files, Riverdale and Supernatural. Some of the parts of the building are closed to the public but other parts are accessible. A visit to this abandoned building is a quintessential Vancouver experience and perfect for Halloween.

Fraser Historical Cemetery Tour

Hosted by a Sense of History Research Services, walk through a cemetery while listening to your guide tell the stories behind the graves including the mystery surrounding an unmarked grave and a possible curse. This tour is a great way to get to know your city better while honoring and remembering the dead which is what Halloween was all about.

All Souls at Mountain View Cemetery

Mountain View Cemetery is situated in East Van. Living up to its name the cemetery’s slightly elevated location gives the change to see a beautiful view of the city and north side mountains. On October 31st the cemetery will host an All Souls event with harpist Janelle Nadeau for a night of music honoring the dead. As advertised it will be a quiet sanctuary from the noise of Halloween.

Halloween Mystery Night

Hosted by Vancouver Mysteries, this special Halloween mystery will take you and your friends through Downtown and Gastown completing challenges to solve the murder of Jimmy Capello.
