The electronic dance music powerhouse that is Infected Mushroom returned to the Commodore Ballroom on Saturday, once more bringing psychedelic delight to Vancouver and a packed house of eager fans.

The Israeli duo, comprised of producers Amit Duvdevani and Erez Eisen, played the room as part of their Head of Nasa and the Two Amish Boys Tour, and demonstrated that after two decades of innovation in the music business they still have heaps of new tricks to pull.

As well as playing tracks from their tour’s titular album, released in 2018, the group got roars from the crowd mixing in favourites like “Deeply Disturbed,” “Becoming Insane” and “Cities of the Future.”

It was easy to see why they have twice been ranked amongst the world’s “10 Best DJ’s” by U.K.’s DJ Magazine. Flanked by two giant demonic – or rather infected – mushroom heads, with glowing eyes and serrated teeth, the group showcased exactly why they command such a global following, throwing down one foot-stomper after another to an ecstatic crowd.

Hopping between rays of lazers, Duvdevani provided the vocals and led the crowd in dance, often wielding a drumstick like a baton and joyfully conducting the dance force at his feet. Eisen stood behind the decks and a keyboard, bringing the music together as Thomas Cunningham – the group’s guitarist – shredded away and drummer Rogerio Jardim kept the fast-paced beat.

One of the draws of psytrance is the assurance of a “drop”, that moment when a melodic crescendo gives way to the thundering beat and the crowd springs back into the thick of the dancing. Infected Mushroom delivered happily on that front, giving the crowd few chances to rest their feet.

Not that many seemed to mind. Glowing hairpins and bejewelled faces bobbed and shook to the vibrations coming from the speakers, wooing their appreciation whenever the music calmed and promptly jumping into step whenever the beat picked up again.

If you like psychedelic music, it was the place to be in Vancouver that night.

Currently based in L.A., Infected Mushroom often play at the Commodore when they come to Vancouver. Their upcoming tour dates can be found here.
