Based in Seoul, South Korea, SamulNori was founded in 1978 when the four original members (including Kim Duk Soo) set out to preserve and perform traditional itinerant music and dance from their country. The tradition is rooted in nongak or farmer’s band music – comprising music, acrobatics, folk dance, and rituals that were performed to ensure and celebrate favourable rice harvests.
The ensemble has grown tremendously since that time, sparking a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and worldwide through the release of 15 albums and numerous international tours including festival appearances at the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festival.
