This holiday season, Early Music Vancouver (EMV) will recreate a large-scale Yuletide concert such as what might have been heard at an early 17th century German congregation. Festive Cantatas – Praetorius Christmas Vespers runs at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on December 20, 2015 at 3pm.
Presented in partnership with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Early Music Guild of Seattle, and Early Music Society of the Islands, this holiday concert will unite over 50 of North America’s most accomplished musicians specializing in early 17th century music, offering an opportunity to see through a window into a very specific and joyful musical tradition that still resonates today.
Staying true to the style of a 17th century congregation, audience members will be invited to sing along to well-known Christmas carols from composer Michael Praetorius, one of the most prolific and influential composers in the early German Baroque. With music direction by David Fallis, an internationally respected conductor and artistic director of the Toronto Consort, this massive ensemble of over 50 musicians will include thirteen vocal soloists, three theorbo players, multiple keyboardists, a string band, Montreal’s ‘Les Rose des Vents’ cornetto & sackbut ensemble, and Vancouver’s own Laudate Singers. Grammy Award-nominated alto Laura Pudwell and major New York City-based soprano Joelle Greanleaf will perform among the vocal soloists.
A pair of tickets to Festive Cantatas – Praetorius Christmas Vespers at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on December 20, 2015 at 3pm.
