Hollow Twin has only been recording music for eight years but listening to their haunting, cerebral music, the dark folk-rock duo sounds like they’ve been doing this for eighteen years, particularly on their latest single, “Before I Leave.” Made up of the talented Rebecca Wosk and Emmalee Watts, the latest Hollow Twin song is a haunting slow-burner, steadily building momentum like a cold, dark wave on the West coast of Vancouver Island, which is where the song was produced and recorded by Colin Stewart (Yukon Blonde, Dan Mangan, Kathryn Calder, The New Pornographers).
According to the Vancouver band, the song is about “loving someone deeply, but never revealing your true feelings and not knowing how they feel in return.” That pain, that vulnerability, is palpable throughout the track – a cathartic and relatable sorrow that resonates from Wosk’s permeating vocals. Likewise, the accompanying dreamlike video captures the melancholic aesthetics of the song perfectly, a video that incredibly was created on a $130 budget in Wosk’s Vancouver basement. With an EP and a couple of singles under their belt, Hollow Twin’s poignant songs are confident, radiating optimism with some pain – the perfect type of music for these trying times.
