Fresh from a powerhouse performance at SXSW in March, Gauntlet Hair are bringing their brand of shimmering, shrieking lo-fi to The Waldorf on May 5th. Currently on a coast-to-coast US tour in support of their self-titled debut album, the band will be granting a major exception to lucky Vancouver fans by crossing the border to play this one exclusive Canadian date.
Essentially a duo made up of vocalist and guitarist Andy R and drummer Craig Nice, the tour will find the band expanded to a 4-piece with the addition of bassist Matt Daniels and guitarist Nathan Wright to round out the sound of their onstage line-up.
After a string of successful 7” releases, the Denver, Colorado based group returned to their native Chicago last spring to record “Gauntlet Hair”, a process that took place almost entirely in the living room of Andy R’s grandmother, who we can only assume is a big fan of distortion. Since the album’s release in October the band has noticed a major upswing in popularity, thanks in part to trippy video clips like “Keeping Time” and “I Was Thinking”, as well as the nostalgia-tinged “Top Bunk”, which plays as something of an ironic tribute to everyone’s favorite action-hero-turned-politico.
The show will kick off with the decidedly sweeter “Tropicore” sounds of NYC native Dana Buoy. He’s back on this side of the planet to promote his own debut album, “Summer Bodies”, which will hit the airwaves on May 8th.
5/05 @ The Waldorf (8pm, $12.00, ages 19+).
