Cameryn Moore is a “Phone Sex Operator, Playwright, Comedian, Sex Educator … Dirty, Smart, and Fun in one plush package” according to her Twitter. Cameryn tours North America, performing her various pieces, giving talks and workshops on healthy sexuality and can also MC your upcoming event! Her latest show Slut (R)evolution stayed true to the smack-in-the-face title and poster image. Seated in cabaret style and with a glass of red wine in hand, I was suddenly on the other side of a very interesting conversation.
This one-woman show was captivating, witty and of course, very kinky. The comedian told stories that would make some squirm in their seats, but isn’t that why one goes to see live theatre? For this audience, the squirming was accompanied by deep belly laughs and wide eyes glued to the stage. Her nonchalant conversation with the audience was easy to be drawn into and the shifting stories hooked together as nicely as a pair of handcuffs. Like any sexual encounter, it wasn’t all be highs but the moments in-between acted as reprieve for the next tasty tale.
The rawness of her stories was refreshing. Like sitting down with a girlfriend over coffee to compare escapades but your girlfriend is a bi-curious, S & M loving standup comedian. Cameryn’s monologue veered from being in a committed long-term lesbian relationship to finding her way back to the penis to her sexual experiments at Burning Man festival. For all the anecdotes, Cameryn also gave a glimpse into her Mormon upbringing. She openly admits, “I wish I could re-trace my sexual life back to something other than rebelling against my father”. It was a nice break to hear her speak about this time in her life and she was the most compelling when she was.
With a candid show such as this, it’s always that extra bit engaging wondering what is fact and what is fiction, but in the end it doesn’t really matter as long as you’re into it. The audience was full of supporters and they loved every minute of it. It’s not every day someone comes along and speaks so openly and passionately about their sexuality. Cameryn’s non-apologetic storytelling layered with her genuine heart made this show so great, with just the right amount of naughty and nice.
