1. Whitehorse
with Daniel Romano & The Trilliums
Saturday, January 26th at the Commodore Ballroom
It’s been well over 10 years since I first heard of Luke Doucet; I randomly caught his former band Veal performing on the Mike Bullard show (remember that guy?) and that was it – I was a fan for life. Doucet’s witty, sharp-tongued narratives are unlike any other, whether they’re on Veal’s piss-and-vinegar rock albums, his heart-wrenching and whiskey-shooting solo efforts (namely 2005’s excellent Broken (And Other Rogue States)), or his latest project, Whitehorse, where he splits the creative duties with the lovely Melissa McClelland. The two were married in 2006 and are showing no signs of slowing down. Don’t miss your chance to catch one of Canada’s hottest duos when they play the Commodore this Saturday.
Doors at 7 p.m.
Tickets available online.
2. Madchild
with Cityreal, Ghost and Matt Brevner
Friday, January 25th at the Commodore Ballroom
Madchild’s Dope Sick tour rolls through town this weekend. Fresh off the release of his first-ever full-length solo album (Dope Sick), which saw Shane Bunting exorcising his drug demons that reportedly blew $3 million over three years, the Canadian rap veteran will be treating fans on Friday at the Commodore. Be sure to get there in time to catch Cityreal, the guy’s a real gem.
Doors at 8 p.m.
Tickets available online.
3. Sex With Strangers
with Fine Times and The Never Surprise
Thursday, January 24th at Media Club
Start your weekend off early (and naughty) and catch Vancouver’s own Sex With Strangers at Media Club. The high-energy group is still buzzing off the release of their fourth full-length, Behaviours, which was produced by Adam Percy at Garth Richardson’s studio and was released late last year. The group have played everything from star-making festivals like SXSW and Sled Island, to one of the world’s premier electro fests, the Shambhala Music Festival at Salmo River Ranch.
Doors at 8 p.m.
Tickets available online.
4. Portage and Main
with White Ash Falls and Rob Butterfield
Friday, January 25th at the Biltmore Cabaret
Vancouver folkers Portage and Main are releasing their sophomore effort Never Had The Time this week. A lot has happened since the group formed just three years ago in early 2010 – their self-titled 2011 debut earned them appearances at CMW and NXNE, and some airplay love from the CBC. Headed by founding members John Sponarski and Harold Donnelly, both of whom provide lead vocals and guitars, Portage and Main are well on their way to permanently etching their name into the collective musical consciousness of this country. We’re so pumped for this one that we want you to go for free – enter here to win a pair of tickets.
Doors at 9 p.m.
Tickets available at Zulu, Neptune and Red Cat Records.
5. Pinback
with Judgement Day
Tuesday, January 22nd at Venue Nightclub

Now in its 15th year, the San Diego duo’s partnership known as Pinback has come a long way since releasing its debut in 1999 on New Jersey label Ace Fu Records. The group is touring on the strength of their fifth LP released in October 2012, Information Retrieved, which hit 71 on the Billboard 200.
