This June, the Vancouver International Song Institute (VISI) presents its anticipated SONGFIRE Festival, a month-long celebration of the wondrous pairing of poetry and song, highlighting the rich and intimate connection shared between storytellers throughout history. The annual festival unites local and international artists and scholars through a series of inspiring concerts, workshops, and masterclasses held at UBC and various Vancouver venues from May 30-June 26, 2013 Let the Florid Music Praise! – A much anticipated return of award- winning pianist Graham Johnson, presenting Goethe’s Mignon and Britten’s On this Island, in tandem with soprano Martha Guth.VISI proudly welcomes back audience favourite and pianist extraordinaire Graham Johnson. Author of The Vocal music of Benjamin Britten (Guildhall 2003), Mr. Johnson will share the stage with soprano Martha Guth, acclaimed VISI founding faculty member and 2007 Wigmore Hall International Song Competition winner. Together, they will concoct an evening full of magic!  The recital’s first half tells the story of Goethe’s Mignon, in settings by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, and others. Britten’s On this Island (on poems by Auden) is presented in the second half, interwoven with Britten’s realisations of Purcell songs, shedding innovative light on one of Britten’s famous song cycles.
