Toro y Moi has a way of blending together a myriad of different styles, which is apparent not only in his music but in everything from his background (half Filipino, half African-American) to his nom de plume, which is two thirds Spanish, one third French. His music continually defies genre, as you can hear the influences of everything from hiphop to electronic to indie pop, although he is most commonly associated with the chillwave movement. The new video for “Never Matter”, which is the third single off his latest album, was shot in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, and is a great introduction if you’ve never heard of him before; and while you’re at it, check out our live review of his February show at the Biltmore Cabaret.
