“The Next Day” is the eponymous song off David Bowie’s latest album, and the accompanying video features Hollywood heavyweights Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard, who costarred in last year’s The Dark Knight Rises. With its heavy use of Christian imagery including Bowie dressed like Christ, self flagellation, sketchy priests, and the stigmata, the video has already drawn complaints from some in the Catholic community and comes with an “Explicit” label, despite a pair of strategically-placed pasties. Conceived and written by Bowie himself, the video not only offers a glimpse into his mind but also reflects his well-known enthusiasm for pushing people’s buttons.
