Sam Roberts Band to headline Global Citizen Live at the Commodore Ballroom, April 12th
International advocacy organization Global Citizen is launching their 2018 Canadian campaigning efforts at Vancouver’s own Commodore Ballroom. Yesterday the international movement for change announced that Canadian darling, Sam Roberts Band, will headline Global Citizen Live on April 12, 2018, with special performances by The Elwins, Crown Lands and Horsepowar.
The event will be a combination of pop and policy. Local legislators and activists will speak on two big focus issues: women and climate change.
“It’s incredible to see all different walks of life join the Global Citizen movement and become unified through the power of music,” says Sam Roberts Band. “We are so proud to be part of something that inspires and motivates change, and what ultimately has the ability to make this world a better place.”
Global Citizen is a proactive movement of engaged citizens—its goal is to create a collective of concerned voices. The central aim is to have young citizens call on world leaders to honour their responsibilities in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“The unwavering support of Canada’s leadership, artists and activists on the global stage will help ensure the improvement of girls and women’s health and their adaptability to climate change,” says Erin Thomson, Head of Partnerships for Global Citizen Canada.
The Commodore event will be free-ticketed, meaning those who are interested need to take special action to be entered to win tickets to the show. Through Global Citizens’ website, citizens that sign up learn about important issues and have the opportunity to take action by contacting politicians and activists. While contributing to a movement for world betterment, Global Citizens also earn rewards for their actions.
Global Citizen Live is the movement’s first event in Vancouver, but it is by no means a stranger to Canada. The movement was in Montreal 2016 for the Global Fund’s Replenish Conference, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an appearance. That event focused on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and helped raise $12.9BN, which will save 8 million lives.
As Global Citizen is set to host its 2019 Women Deliver Conference in Vancouver, next month’s event is a way to mobilize and engage Global Citizens on topics of the global gender divide. Canada may be a leader in women’s rights, but it has a long way to go. Representatives of Global Citizen say that next month’s event will act as an introduction between Vancouver and the movement, paving the way for more events and activism in the city.
While the movement is concerned with a wide range of issues, the Sam Roberts Band-headlined show will zero in on women’s health and climate change. Activates and legislators—not yet announced—will discuss the need for gender equality and its contribution to a healthy global economy. Leading up to the event, citizens will be encouraged to take action to improve the economic empowerment of women farmers on the front-lines of climate change in Canada. They will be urged to contact Catherine McKenna, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
