Scout Niblett’s new video for “Gun” is a fully loaded clip of contradiction and incongruity aimed directly at your forehead. The video opens to the notes of a music box as Scout gets dressed as Snow White and heads down to the local fair, where she waves from the ferris wheel, poses for pictures, and generally spreads goodwill. But the audio backdrop to these idyllic scenes of childhood innocence is not what you’d expect, as the music box almost immediately gets overwhelmed by the heavy chords of a song that drips with darkness and loathing. The contrast of what you’re seeing and hearing creates an uncomfortable disconnect when you realize there’s a vengeful heart beating underneath the happy visuals. The best part of the video is when Scout, in full Snow White costume, rocks the absolute shit out of one of those plastic, inflatable guitars that you’d win at a carny’s booth.
