Saturday morning cartoons were once a cherished ritual for many North American children. Adults today may remember a time when they would eagerly wake up before 8:00 am on a weekend, excited for a morning of fun and adventure fuelled by a sweet and comforting bowl of cereal. These are the memories that Dejan Stanic hopes to recapture with Saturday Mornings, Vancouver’s first and only cereal bar.
The Pop-Up
Dejan and his girlfriend Nina are inspired by nostalgia and the love of cereal. They created Saturday Mornings to give people the opportunity to feel like a kid again. Dejan and Nina host a pop-up cereal bar every month in collaboration with a local business. They hope to find a permanent space in 2019.
On the menu are four stable “signature bowls” and a rotating “feature bowl.” Each bowl is comprised of two or three cereals and various complementary toppings. There is also a “build-a-bowl” option where customers can choose from the large selection of classic, limited edition, and international cereals present. Some cereals are rare flavours hailing from Korea and Japan.
Customers can enjoy the 90’s jams playing throughout the store and a range of memorabilia from the era of Saturday Morning cartoons. Mementos include a vintage television set and an original Bugs Bunny plush toy made in 1971. All these carefully curated elements add to the immersive experience, such that one truly feels transported back in time.
Halloween Edition
Saturday Mornings hosted a special Halloween Cereal Pop-Up in October that was a collaboration with Clubcard Printing. They featured the seasonally appropriate Garfield bowl which consists of Pumpkin Spice Frosted Flakes, Apple Cinnamon Special K, and Golden Grahams topped with brown sugar whipped cream, drizzles of caramel and pumpkin puree, and a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg. It was a delightful combination that tastes like a Pumpkin Spice Latte crossed with corn flakes.
